For years, the signs of a breaking system have been impossible to ignore. South Africa generates an estimated 55–59 million tonnes of general waste every year, and roughly 90% of it goes straight to landfill or an illegal dump site — a national recycling rate of just 10–11%. Johannesburg's landfill airspace is running out. Cape Town isn't far behind. Nearly 40% of what ends up in those landfills is organic material, decomposing anaerobically into methane. And right in the middle of it all, an estimated 60,000–90,000 informal reclaimers work tirelessly under harsh conditions — collecting up to 90% of the paper and packaging South Africa actually recycles, for a median income of around R1,430 a month, with no formal recognition and no guarantee of payment for the collection service itself.

We looked at these daily breakdowns and saw a single, connected challenge: a disconnect of information and value. Waste isn't just rubbish; it is uncaptured value. The problem was never a lack of willingness to recycle or work — it was a lack of infrastructure to bring everyone together seamlessly.
