South Africa wastes an estimated 10 million tonnes of food a year — a third of everything the country produces — at a cost to the economy of roughly R60–62 billion annually, close to 2% of GDP. Fruit, vegetables and cereals make up 70% of that loss.

At the same time, food expenditure eats up 30–40% of household income in low-income urban and township areas, and nearly one in five South African households experiences hunger. Smallholders, meanwhile, capture less than 1% of proceeds in South Africa's National Fresh Produce Markets, despite doing much of the actual growing — watching a hard-earned harvest go to waste for lack of a market stall or a local connection.
